That Tiffany Ring I Received Years Later

My boyfriend and I used to love each other very much. We have known each other for four years. We had a lot of memorable love experiences. We once went to the New Year firework ceremony together and made vows to the god. We ever planted some lavender and now they have grown into a big cluster. We liked drawing our future blueprint and promised to stay with each other and never separate…  But everything seemed to have been challenged, as my company wanted to send me to another city.

image I told him my company’s decision last week. He proposed to finish our relationship for that he thought love couldn’t survive when faced with the distance between lovers. I wept and said I was willing to keep our relationship. I told him I had confidence in us for we loved each other that deeply. But he just insisted on his own thought and asked me to be realistic. I felt his indifference and thought he didn’t love me any more. I loved him. Maybe leaving him was the best choice. I agreed to break up and left with big sorrow.

Years later I married a man in that city and had my new family there. At one weekend I drove back to visit my parents. Mum asked me to stay for that night.

When I had a bath and prepared to sleep, mum came to my room and told me she had kept something for me these years. I wondered what it might be. Mum took out a light blue casket. I opened it and found one ring of Tiffany lying inside silently. “Do you still remember John?” Mum asked. “Yeah, he used to be my last boyfriend. But he was too cruel to have refused to continue our relationship. Never mention him again, mum, please.” “Honey, what you saw was not the truth. This ring is from him.” I was surprised at Mum’s words. “He asked me to keep this without letting you know until you have your own family. He said he chose to leave for he shouldn’t influence your career. You should have a much better future in that bigger city. He had bought this for proposal before you told him you had to go to another city.”

Tears ran down my face.
